David Bowie made a recording of Peter and the Wolf in 1978 with the Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted by Eugene Ormandy. At first, the latter was rather sceptical about choosing a rock star as narrator. But the album became a huge success: it received positive reviews, ended up on the 136th place on the US Billboard 200 and even picked up a Grammy nomination for Best Recording for Children in 1979. In the end, the album lost out to The Muppet Show soundtrack.
