Peter and the Wolf, written for the Moscow Youth Theatre, is a musical fairy tale. To introduce the young audience to the symphonic orchestra, Prokofiev gave each character his own motif and instrument. On the score, the composer wrote that the instruments and corresponding characters should be introduced one by one before the story begins, so that the children would be able to follow it properly.
