STEVE REICH FOR 18 MUSICIANS AND 10 DANCERS
‘The experience of creating and performing Rain is ‘unconditioning’: it requires yielding to a sense of generous anarchy within a rigorously constructed mathematical framework,’ the choreographer recalls. Rain, one of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s most vibrant choreographies, is set to Music for 18 Musicians by Steve Reich (who turns 80 in October). It premiered in 2001 and will now be revived exclusively, after having been away from the scene for years. It is a sort of madness of movement, a tide or fire that passes from body to body without ever settling on one particular person, choreographed to the pulsating rhythmic waves of Reich’s minimalist music. We witness the surrender of dancers to an irrepressible collective energy that binds them to each other, as an exuberant network takes shape in which breath and speed are shared, as is that strange camaraderie that can only come into being beyond exhaustion.
