‘Every departure longingly awaits a return, / Only you have missed the day of your return.’ Thus Penelope describes her wait for the return of her husband, Odysseus, after the end of the Trojan War. Contrary to what the title implies, this is first and foremost the story of Penelope: she is the real protagonist, as in Fauré’s Pénélope, which we are presenting as a counterpart to this baroque work. Monteverdi and his librettist succeeded in rendering this well-known story from Homer’s Odyssey with profound humanity and compassion. Whereas Monteverdi wrote his first opera, L’Orfeo, for the ducal court in Mantua, Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in patria was composed for a public theatre in Venice. The expressive recitative brings the dramatic aspect to the fore in this dramma per musica. With René Jacobs on the rostrum, it would be an understatement to say that the theatrical element is in good hands, even in this concert performance.
