In the footsteps of Monteverdi

From the Duchy of Mantua to the Republic of Venice, one name rang out louder than all others in the musical firmament of the early seventeenth century, that of Claudio Monteverdi. At this pivotal moment in history, his work heralded not only the transition from Renaissance music to the baroque, but also the coming of age of a then-new art form: opera. Get the most out of the upcoming Monteverdi diptych I Grotteschi by immersing yourself for a day in the artistic atmosphere of this fascinating era.

On the programme:

• A Concertino devoted to the works of Monteverdi’s pupil Francesco Cavalli and two of Cavalli’s fellow composers, Barbara Strozzi and Antonia Bembo.
• An open masterclass in baroque singing with students of the MM Academy led by conductor Leonardo García Alarcón.
• The musical lecture Inside the Music, during which this world authority on early and baroque music will explore the score of I Grotteschi in detail.
