COMPANIONS IN ROMANTICISM PROCLAIM THEIR FRIENDSHIP
‘At the piano, Johannes Brahms introduced us to marvellous lands, and made us travel with him to the world of the Ideal. His playing, marked by genius, changed the piano into an orchestra of distressing yet triumphant voices.’ The words of Robert Schumann, raving about the young Brahms, twenty-three years his junior. From that moment on, a deep friendship and mutual artistic admiration united the lives of the two men: a friendship that also included Clara, Schumann’s wife and performer of many of Brahms’s compositions, who remained close to Brahms even after the death of her husband in 1856. Ian Bostridge, a specialist in German lieder (his recording of Schubert and Schumann received a Gramophone Award), recreates the fateful, exhilarating, yet painful, friendship between Schumann and Brahms in a programme that includes some of the most moving vocal music the two composers ever wrote.
