BBC Music Magazine Personality of the Year, proud son of Scotland, vocal coach of forty football fans, volunteer vaccinator and a singing, idiosyncratic nose – Nicky Spence is all this! Musically too, the tenor cannot be pigeonholed, even though one repertoire is particularly close to his heart: Czech music. During this matinee recital, he will take several young singers from the MM Academy under his wing and perform with them the inspired melodies of such Bohemian and Moravian greats as Antonín Dvořák and Vítězslava Kaprálová. After his brilliant appearances in Jenůfa and From the House of the Dead, we could hardly miss out on music by Leoš Janáček too. With the Diary of One Who Disappeared on the programme, this recital has all the promise of an afternoon of poignant and emotionally charged songs.
