Egypt, 48 BC. When Cleopatra plots to overthrow her brother Tolomeo, Julius Caesar becomes involved in the struggle for power within the Egyptian royal house. The great romance between the Roman commander and the charismatic queen sparks against the backdrop of murder plots and political scheming, but love ultimately triumphs, as Cleopatra places the Egyptian empire under Caesar’s protection.
In this magnum opus by Handel, the most virtuosic arias, full of vocal fireworks, alternate with the most sensitive the composer ever wrote. For this concert performance, the world-famous mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli relishes the versatile role of Cleopatra, accompanied by the soloists of Monaco's Musiciens du Prince.
