AN ACCESSIBLE AND FUN INTRODUCTION TO THE NOSE
Inside the Music is a series of musical lectures that will introduce you to the operas on our programme. For The Nose, we invite Gilles Remy, lecturer at the Conservatory of Forest, IAD and ARTS2, and for many years an inspired speaker and introducer in many cultural houses, including La Monnaie. How does Shostakovich's first opera bring together folk music and atonality, polkas and galops, balalaikas and flexatones into one vibrant whole? What is the influence of the composer's years as a pianist in film houses and vaudeville theatres? And what particular artistic milieu and time period enabled this work to emerge? You will find out all about it during this accessible lecture, illustrated with musical examples at the piano. And afterwards, you can let all the insights sink in during a convivial reception.
