TWO FIGUREHEADS OF BELGIAN ART FACE UP TO MAHLER
‘My time will come,’ Gustav Mahler once prophesied. Alain Platel has drawn inspiration from the cultural study Change and Culture in the West, 1900-1914 by the historian Philipp Blom, and developed his Mahler project into an all-male production that looks at the troubled early years of the 20th century, which ultimately led to the great crisis of the First World War. Taking Mahler’s lieder as a basis, the composer Steven Prengels creates a soundscape using sampled natural sounds and elements from our everyday surroundings, but also incorporates the polyphony of the Congolese singers Boule Mpanya and Russell Tshiebua. Berlinde De Bruyckere – who worked on the first production of Dusapin’s Penthesilea at La Monnaie in 2015 – is creating an original set for the dancers of les ballets C de la B; this is the first time she has worked with Alain Platel. Has Mahler’s prediction come true?
Pierre-Philippe Hofmann followed Alain Platel and his company les ballets C de la B around during the entire repetition process of nicht schlafen. The video installation he made, can be seen after every show.
"Alain Platel componeert bloedmooie portretten van hetgeen nauwelijks schoon te portretteren is: lijden, aanbidding, vechten,..."
