IMPROVISATION WITH A NOTE OF DANCE AND JAZZ
“Improvisation is composition in the immediacy of the moment” reflects Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. In the instrumental suite A Love Supreme, one of the highlights of 20th century jazz, there is a remarkable tension between complexity and simplicity. Coltrane uses the structures of blues music to produce highly intuitive freewheeling improvisations fuelled by his limitless creativity. The choreography takes on the challenge of bringing together improvisation and formal composition, to interweave them and to let them become absorbed in one another. Choreographed in 2005 by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Salva Sanchis A Love Supreme has been reworked for a new cast of young performers and extended into a full evening’s programme. The result is a performance of great strength in which the dancers surrender themselves totally to the spirituality of Coltrane’s music, together creating a hymn to divine love.
