Each time, the mystery remains— Benjamin Britten
1992, 2002, 2022… Sir Antonio Pappano was the Music Director of La Monnaie from 1992 to 2002: ten wonderful years of fruitful collaboration with our orchestra, which is celebrating its 250th anniversary in 2022. The perfect occasion to invite the illustrious pianist and conductor to make his grand return to Brussels. Joined by the tenor Ian Bostridge, he will take on one of the most moving cycles in the entire history of music: Schubert’s Winterreise, which recounts the journey of a lonely Wanderer through the frozen landscape of his broken heart.
What was originally intended as a classical recital - with just a singer and a pianist -, turned into a full concert. Heading up an ensemble of La Monnaie musicians, Antonio Pappano performs Hans Zender's orchestral version. So, this evening at least, one Wanderer finds his companions again.
