with this edition, I wanted to offer conductors and directors all that is possible.— Jean-Christophe Keck
Working feverishly on what was to be his first real grand opera, Jacques Offenbach made many different versions of Les Contes d’Hoffmann. Following his untimely death, anyone who wanted to perform the work had to bring order to all the fragments and ensembles he left behind. In their search for ‘the definitive score’, publishers, musicologists, and artists have put forward their own versions. The result is a musicological puzzle, which Jean-Christophe Keck, an eminent authority on Offenbach, will put together during a fascinating lecture on Wednesday 11 December.
