Julia Bullock is actually moving the whole art form into a new relevance— Peter Sellars on Julia Bullock
As the Middle East is ablaze with conflict, a young woman waits at a European border, hoping to cross over to Zauberland – a magical land of peace and security. But when she falls asleep, she dreams of the burnt-out city she has been forced to leave behind.
Working with British playwright Martin Crimp, the composer and former director general of La Monnaie Bernard Foccroulle has created 16 new songs, which are performed alongside Robert Schumann and Heinrich Heine’s Dichterliebe. The result is Zauberland, a new dramatic piece, staged by Katie Mitchell and performed by Julia Bullock and Cédric Tiberghien, which opens up a dialogue between past and present, between a Europe entrenched behind its borders and the continent’s eastern and Mediterranean roots.
