the best of my operas. Without exception, and without any doubt.— Giuseppe Verdi (1845)
In Reims in 1429, Joan of Arc urges King Charles VII to do battle. For his seventh opera, Giuseppe Verdi built on the success of Nabucco and I Lombardi. The libretto of Giovanna d’Arco concentrates on the ‘here and now’ and on the main protagonist’s struggles. As a result, the historical events make way for impressive choral tableaux and a heroic musical characterisation of Giovanna. This autumn the La Monnaie audience will be given an insight into the fascinating figure of Joan of Arc: through the prism of the 19th century in this concert performance of Verdi’s opera, and later in the stage production of Honegger’s Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher.
